Summary
A chance to tour the Madeira Terrace seafront arches and promenade in Brighton in the first phase of restorationMadeira Terrace is a Grade 2* listed 865-metre-long stretch of seafront arches and promenade on Madeira Drive in Brighton. Mackley has been appointed by Brighton & Hove City Council to undertake the first phase of the restoration
The project includes the refurbishment of 28 of the arches between the Royal Crescent steps and Shelter Hall / Concorde 2, which have been inaccessible to the public for a number of years due to their condition. Works include dismantling all cast iron elements for shot blasting and repairs, followed by painting and reassembly. There will also be work on the promenade, with a full replacement of the upper deck that incorporates lighting and infrastructure for future activity and events. There will also be a new lift installation to allow full accessibility.
CIOB visitors to the site will be able to learn more about the complex process of dismantling the cast iron arches, find out how Mackley plan to track each item of ironwork to ensure it is returned to the same bay, and learn more about what will happen to each piece at the specialist foundry. There will also be opportunity to see firsthand some of the challenges faced by the team as they dismantle the Victorian structure, including the construction materials used and the management of the Japanese Spindle plants that have rooted themselves into the rear wall.
