Summary

Join us for this webinar looking at how we repair and protect historic brickwork.

This online CPD will look at how we repair historic brickwork. It will consider deterioration factors, repointing, brick replacement and protection within the context of the legislative framework that guides repairs to historic buildings. The primary focus will be to engage participants in how to recognise good practice and apply appropriate conservation philosophies to historic brick repairs.


Aims of this online CPD is:

· To develop participants understanding of how to repair historic brickwork.

· To help participants recognise when to repair to historic brickwork.

· To introduce participants to the key elements of a successful repair.

Speaker


David Pope, Historic brick and Flint Specialist, Ernest Barnes Ltd.

David runs Ernest Barnes Ltd, a company with over forty years of experience undertaking specialist brick and flint repairs to historic buildings. The company firmly believes in the philosophy of minimum intervention and takes pride in its ability to interpret brick and flint buildings, understand their significance, and apply appropriate conservation philosophies. With an extensive portfolio covering over 500 years of architectural heritage, they undertake work for leading heritage organisations. Having conserved over twenty-five National Trust buildings and rebuilt several First World War cemeteries in northern France, they are recognised within the industry for their skills, knowledge, and experience.

David acts as a consultant on leading conservation projects, recently he was the historic brickwork consultant for the Crystal Palace Subway Restoration project. His other passion lies in transferring skills and knowledge between experienced practitioners and emerging conservators. He is currently a part-time PhD research student at University College London, focusing on knowledge acquisition within the field of historic brick pointing.
