Summary
Each year the annual CIOB Conference addresses key topics affecting the heritage sector. The CIOB’s annual Conservation conference in partnership with English Heritage, will this year focus on people and how they bring creativity to all aspects of building conservation work. Examples include creative drawings and artistic skills, innovated approaches to the use of materials, visual interpretation, education and learning techniques and conservation in action.
Professionals working in the conservation and heritage sector of the built environment requires specialist skills and knowledge, and for over 15 years this conference, has discussed, challenged, and lead the way on this important topic.
The conference welcomes a variety of attendees, and comprises talks, case study presentations, with plenty of opportunity for delegates in the audience to participate in discussions.
Conference refreshments are served in the exhibitor hall, this is the opportinuty to network with other delegates and meet with our exhibitors. We have a great selection of exhibitors including an interactive demonstration from Railscape Technologies and Scott Mcgibbon demonstrate gamification and extended reality technologies for vocational skills development. This will enable delegates to undertake a snippet of one of the "serious games". This will enable them to gain “snapshot” knowledge and understanding of the concept of “play” as part of the training cycle, as well as engage with a gamified lesson to show competency and knowledge transfer through a “hands-on” learning experience - vital to vocational training – whereby the focus requires to be learning by participation rather than learning through theory or watching a demonstration.
Arrival and registration opens at 08:45.

Sophie Norton
Head of Conservation, Messenger Construction LimitedHaving begun my career with a degree in art history and archaeology and a Masters in cultural heritage, I have a fairly unique view on the preservation of historic buildings from the perspective of the contractor. 5 years ago, I joined Messenger BCR where I spent my time writing reports to document repairs and learning practical techniques on site. Not only did I gain an appreciation for the skills that the team have, but it also gave me an understanding of fundamental conservation methods. Now my role as Head of Conservation allows me to combine my background in heritage studies with project management to successfully conduct historic building conservation projects for Messenger. We are very lucky to have such an experienced and talented team, but there is a significant gap in skills due to a lack of sustainable training programmes. We currently take on our own trainees that learn on site from our team, but this is not a solution to fix the endemic problem. I believe that it is a problem that is best solved through collaboration.
