Chartership represents the pinnacle of professional excellence, demonstrating a practitioner’s advanced knowledge, experience, and commitment to ethical standards within their field. More than just chartered accountants, professionals can become chartered in a wide range of sectors, including construction.

A chartered professional is an expert who has gained a specific level of skill or competence in a particular field of work, which has been recognised by the award of a formal credential by a relevant professional organisation. Achieving chartered status not only authenticates an individual's expertise but also enhances their credibility and career prospects.

Who can become chartered?

Not just anyone can call themselves chartered. Professionals must first demonstrate their expertise to a professional body such as the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), or The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), who will then award them chartered status.

The use of the word “Chartered” in a company name is also controlled in the UK by Companies House, which states that companies must provide a letter from their professional body confirming they are authorised to use this title. Professional bodies such as CIOB looking to use Chartered in their name must go a step further, providing evidence of their royal charter status.

Why do professionals become chartered?

Professionals pursue chartered status for several reasons:

  • Professional recognition: It serves as a testament to one’s skills and dedication, earning respect from peers and clients alike.
  • Career advancement: Chartered status can open doors to senior positions and higher remuneration, as employers recognise the value of accredited expertise.
  • Ethical commitment: Chartered professionals are bound by a code of ethics, underscoring their commitment to integrity and responsibility.
  • Continuous development: Maintaining chartered status requires ongoing learning, ensuring professionals remain at the forefront of industry developments.

How does CIOB award charterships?

Established in 1834, CIOB is able to award chartership to professionals in the construction and built environment sector under our Royal Charter, granted by the Privy Council in 1980.

CIOB stands for the promotion for the public benefit of the science, ethics, and practice of building and construction across the world. We aim to improve the quality of life for those using and creating the built environment and act in the public interest as per our Royal Charter.

We focus on improving the built environment by ensuring our members have the qualifications and resources needed to build a better, more sustainable future. Professionals who become chartered by CIOB are entitled to use post-nominals, such as MCIOB for Members and FCIOB for Fellows, to demonstrate their achievement.

Pathways to CIOB Membership

Becoming a Member of the CIOB and attaining chartered status involves a structured process designed to assess a professional’s competencies.

The Chartered Membership grade brings many benefits, including the right to use MCIOB as a post nominal designation. You can also choose between the descriptor of Chartered Construction Manager and Chartered Builder. As a Chartered Member you will have the right to vote and apply to become a Trustee, and thus be able to actively participate in the governance of the CIOB.

The Fellowship grade is the highest award offered by CIOB. Our Fellows are amongst the most experienced and knowledgeable professionals in the construction industry, recognised globally for their skills and achievements throughout their careers. The associated post-nominal, FCIOB, is highly regarded and sought after. Entry to Fellowship is focused on meeting a unique set of leadership competencies and behaviours at a strategic level, reflecting the highest level of professional competence.
