The Chartered Institute of Building has launched its first Code of Practice for Programme Management in the Built Environment

Written for programme and project management professionals in construction, the new code promotes the benefits of managing a number of related projects as part of a programme. It provides practical advice on the processes and procedures that underpin a successful programme, and the controls that ensure effective governance.

Speaking about the new code, Paul Nash CIOB President said: “This first code for programme management ties in with the current big issues of governance, reporting and ethics.   It has a good mix of academic and practical information and is a guide that anybody can pick up. It’s about time that the industry had a ‘go to’ resource like this.”

Programme management is the process of managing a group of related projects in a coordinated way to achieve benefits that would not be available from managing them individually, and is often used to improve an organisation’s performance. In practice, and in its aims, it is often closely related to systems engineering, industrial engineering, change management, and business transformation.

The code is a natural progression from the CIOB Code of Practice for Project Management for Construction and Development, which was first published in 1992 and is currently in its fifth edition. Both Codes were developed by representatives from the major professional institutions, including APM, CIOB, ICE, RIBA and RICS as well as from key government departments, domestic and international corporations, and the university sector.

Copies of the Code can be purchased from Wiley Blackwell or found at http://eu.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-1118717856.html.
