Becoming a Chartered Fellow

Chartered Fellowship represents the highest level of membership within the organisation.

Requirements

You will need at least 5 years of experience leading an organisation, people and contributing to the industry, communities or society. Candidates must also have responsibilities that extend to working with sector stakeholders. This work must demonstrate a contribution to the wider industry or the general public and could be through industry-specific charities such as the Construction Youth Trust, with the CIOB or other stakeholders such as schools, universities, communities and community groups or government agencies.

Non-chartered members will need to show evidence of a level 6 qualification such as a UK bachelor's degree or equivalent. This could be any level 6 academic, vocational or professional qualification and does not necessarily need to be construction-related. We will also recognise a range of other professional body memberships such as RICS, ICE, CIM or APM for example.

CIOB Fellowship

What is CIOB Fellowship and why should you apply?

Fellowship means recognition for my wealth of skills and experience. I have thoroughly enjoyed the challenges my more recent portfolio has provided; the opportunity to capture and almost envelop my experience within the one qualification is an opportunity I could not afford to miss.

Chartered Fellowship (FCIOB)

Chartered Fellowship with the CIOB signifies the highest level of professional recognition in construction management, awarded to those with extensive experience, leadership, and significant contributions to the industry. It connects individuals to a global network of elite professionals and upholds high ethical and professional standards, enhancing their influence and credibility.

The application process

You will be required to produce a 3,000 word reflective account of a project or initiative you have led, through which you can demonstrate your competence in leading people and organisations within the sector.

Following the written application stage, you will attend a professional discussion, lasting approximately 1.5 hours. This exam is conducted by trained professionals and includes two assessors and one chair. The discussion is based on your written project, as well as an interactive discussion on a topical issue affecting the industry.

Before you can move forward with your written application, you will be asked to attend a workshop via Microsoft Teams to go through the whole Fellowship process. Candidates will be charged a fee to attend the workshop.

Fellowship is more than just a title. It has opened doors to new opportunities, expanded my network and deepened my understanding of best practices. It has given me a platform to lead by example, to champion sustainability and ethical leadership, and to drive positive change within the industry.
