Summary
Visit Currie Community High School's £65M Passivhaus project—see cutting-edge design for education & sustainabilityThe Currie Community High School construction project in Edinburgh, led by AtkinsRéalis and Kier, is a major development aimed at creating a state-of-the-art educational facility. With a value of £65 million, the new school will cater to around 1,000 students and is designed to meet the Passivhaus energy-efficiency standards. This standard emphasises reducing energy consumption by up to 70% compared to conventional buildings, significantly lowering operational costs and carbon emissions.
The school will feature a wide range of facilities, including three floors of teaching spaces, sport and leisure facilities including a sports hall, swimming pool, fitness suite, and outdoor areas such as sensory garden, enhancing relationships between the school and community. Designing to foster relationships between the community have been done by essentially creating a hub space which incorporates public spaces like a library, café, wellness centre, and community meeting rooms. The design prioritises sustainability, community interaction, and outdoor learning.
One of the standout aspects of this project is its alignment with the City of Edinburgh Council’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2030. The Passivhaus standard ensures that the building is highly insulated, airtight, and equipped with advanced mechanical ventilation systems for better air quality and thermal performance. The project not only provides a sustainable educational environment but also promotes intergenerational learning and community engagement.
