What’s changing with CIOB’s retired membership grade?

Find out important updates for our retired grade of membership.

Last updated: 3rd October 2024

Our retired members have paved the way throughout their time with CIOB, helping bring positive changes and contributions to the construction industry and the people within it.

It's important that these members can still be involved in the CIOB community without having to fulfil the same obligations as working professionals.

To make the clear distinction between an active working member and a retired member, our Board of Trustees have made the decision that all retired CIOB professionals will now transition to our designated retired grades: 'RetMCIOB' for Members and 'RetFCIOB' for Fellows. This change has been implemented to enhance clarity and trust among industry stakeholders and regulators regarding our membership categories.

As a result, these members’ current grades will be automatically updated on 1st January 2025 and they will be required to use the post-nominals 'RetMCIOB' or 'RetFCIOB,'. Our retired members should also be reminded that they are under no obligation to keep up with their CPD.

Additionally, the Board of Trustees has determined that retired members may continue to contribute their expertise through various volunteering opportunities. These activities may include:

  • Volunteering outside of the construction sector, as long as it does not involve providing advice on construction matters or the broader built environment
  • Participating in local hub committees
  • Engaging in mentoring services that do not require up-to-date construction knowledge
  • Joining panels or non-governance committees within the sector, provided no input on construction or broader built environment topics is required.

We appreciate our members’ continued involvement and value the contributions they bring to our community, even in retirement. Should you have any questions or need further clarification, please do not hesitate to contact us.
