It’s already March 2023. Where has 2022 gone? Time flies when you are on a mission.

We spent a lot of 2021 and 2022 preparing for our new Corporate Plan that runs from this year to 2028 and we struck on one overarching theme of Modern Professionalism. What is that, I hear you ask. Well, it undoubtedly covers implementing new technology for the improvement of the Built Environment, the so-called golden thread, but it is also about who you are as a person and your commitment to acting honestly, with integrity, treating people with respect as other professions such as nurses and medical practitioners are bound to do through their regulating professional bodies.

We, as an industry, are moving closer to being just that although we may not fully understand it yet. The Building Safety Act does enshrine accountability in its provisions and gives us a once in a lifetime opportunity to put construction on an equal footing with other professions and that is key to attracting more people in our profession. A career in construction management is not just about delivering projects on time within budget but about doing the right thing and creating a built environment that is safe, healthy, sustainable and comfortable for all.

Our academic community are key to advancing this aim so we do want your buy-in to what is our most important plan to date. And it doesn’t matter where you are in the world, the principle is the same, we are promoting a professionalised workforce who really care about the buildings they deliver for people. That means putting quality, safety and sustainability first and keeping in mind the interests of the end users at all times. We spend between 80-90% of our time in the built environment so our first commitment should be to making that a good experience for everyone.

Modern Professionalism reflects who the CIOB are and aligns with our vision to improve the quality of life for the users and creators of the built environment and educationalists play a big part in that. It is down to you to engender that sense of responsibility, accountability and professionalism in your students and that is where we are here to help. We have a dedicated route to membership for our academic members with heavily discounted fees for precisely this reason. We can give you the tools to support you and your learners in making this a great industry to work in and making all our lives better.
