CIOB Company Membership transition “smooth and efficient”
CIOB company member Spetisbury Construction Ltd adopts the revised Company Membership regulations.
Earlier this year, we announced changes to our Chartered Company Membership to keep pace with evolving sector regulations and standards.
This ensures CIOB Chartered Membership continues to provide assurance that a company is run by professionally qualified managers who are committed to best practice, ethical standards and professionalism, and has long been seen as an opportunity for commercial organisations in the sector to stand out and confirm their credentials.
The membership standards were updated following consultation with our current members and their clients including discussions around their transition from the previous standards. Under the new criteria, half of a company’s board must be Chartered members of a recognised professional institute, of which one must be a Chartered member of CIOB. The company must also have been trading for a minimum of two years.
Alongside Chartered Building Company and Chartered Building Consultancy designations, the new regulations also introduced two new categories: Chartered Construction Management Company and Chartered Construction Management Consultancy.
Transition process
Spetisbury Construction Ltd became a CIOB Chartered Company Member on October 20 2016, and transitioned to the new company membership regulations in August 2024.
“As a well-known regional contractor operating on the south coast, being a CIOB company member has helped to support our reputation locally,” says Spetisbury Construction Ltd Managing Director, Justin Ives MCIOB. “CIOB members within the company are keen to promote good values and professionalism, and the Chartered Building Company accreditation supports this.”
Justin says the transition was straightforward, with a webinar at the start of August explaining the application and submission process. The application was then completed and supporting documents uploaded on August 6.
“We were advised the application process may take approximately five weeks and an external assessor would be involved in the process,” he says. “So, on August 13 we were very surprised to hear that we had been successfully approved onto the new Rules and Regulations of Company Membership. Overall, the process was very swift but being well organised with our paperwork helped.
“Lily Dawson at the CIOB was very supportive throughout the process, checking in on us to provide her assistance if required. The whole process was smooth and efficient.”
Existing CIOB company members can transition now but are required to transition to the new regulations before December 31 2025. They will then be required to undergo an independent assessment every five years.
